What is High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Skin Tightening (HIFU)?

HIFU uses ultrasound energy to lift, tighten and firm skin. It targets the same foundational layer of the skin (SMAS layer) that is typically addressed in cosmetic surgery. The procedure works by delivering tiny deposits of ultrasound energy into the foundational layer without having to cut or disrupt the surface of the skin. Delivered at the right depth, the ultrasound energy triggers skin’s regenerative process to produce fresh, new collagen. Collagen gives skin strength and elasticity. With more “healthy” collagen available, the skin will gradually develop a more lifted and toned appearance.

HIFU Treatment Theory:

HIFU (High intensity intensive ultrasound) energy is focused at the SMAS layer 3 to 4.5 mm below the skin surface to produce a thermal coagulation zone smaller than 1 mm. At this zone, a high thermal reaction occurs at a temperature of 60 ° C or higher, which causes the SMAS layer contraction and collagen remodeling to skin tightening and lifting.

Effects of HIFU:

  1. It stimulates collagen formation, helps to lift nasolabial folds (the laugh lines).
  2. Reduces sagging jowl, creating a slimmer V-shaped face.
  3. Creates a more well-defined jawline.
  4. Restores fullness to the cheeks. Other areas which can be treated includes arms, abdomen, and buttocks for firming and lifting.

Procedures & Side Effects:

The procedure may last for 30-60 minutes with no downtime. Effective local anaesthetic cream is applied to reduce the discomfort. The procedure is well-tolerated and immediate effect may be seen but best result is usually 1 to 2 months later.

Side effects are minor and rare with experienced board-certified physician. Rarely thermal burns and nerve injuries may occur. More commonly, slight swelling and tenderness may happened a few days after the procedure.
